When one door…..
When thought is put behind the saying, when one door closes another one opens.
I can’t help but want to count how many doors I have passed through in my lifetime?
Last week I was given a door, a solid mahogany door, street value, > $1,500.
So, I was faced with a conundrum, what do I do with this door? Store it for later in my warehouse, donate it, or use it.
So, I built a building for my new door.
I have been filling my time with small projects while waiting for the call to mobilize. The waiting reminds me so much of the oilfield;
“hurry up and wait”.
In the past 3 days I ran into old friends from my BHI days, it was great to catch up.
As I kick this week off and looked at the new door I got to thinking.
I am so glad I walked into the door off of St. Etienne back in 2000. That door was the beginning of my journey with Baker Hughes.
The 17 years I spent in the oilfield were some of the best times I’ve ever had. I made lifelong friends, I worked on some of the largest rigs, worked on some of the longest and most complex wells and deepest water in the world.
All of that experience……
Yes, I have officially retired from the oilfield.
But, I don’t think I will ever retire from working. Q3 had me behind a desk working on my computer, in many ways, this is where I am best utilized. To quote my executive coach, these are the things only I can do.
Whenever I talk to old colleagues I always talk about the great experience I had working for a large corporation. In 17 years I was trained and had the opportunity to spend 4 years of my career in training.
As I develop my various companies I am grateful for all of the doors that I have gone through. I have a blue print for what a great company looks like, and I hope to create an environment where I am able to present all of my employees doors of opportunity from which to grow.
Whether you are facing a door that has just closed or have been staring at the same door for years, enjoy the opportunity.
Should you choose the entrepreneurial path, you will be knocking on many doors. I have come to learn that the doors in my life have come in seasons, some seasons had many doors, and others, well, you have to build around the ones you are given.
Enjoy the ride and thanks for reading.
