the city life
Fear not the unknown—embrace the mystery of discovery.
Over the past 30 years, I’ve seen a lot of views on my way to work. I’ve looked out over the ocean from a helicopter window. I’ve stared out from the 50th floor of a skyscraper. Yet somehow, this view is still my favorite: my city, my playground, my Houston.
What do you see in this picture? Do you see what I see? Can you smell the morning air, feel the energy humming beneath the clouds?
Let me walk you through it.
Each morning, millions of people descend into the belly of the beast.
Thousands of gallons of coffee get poured, thousands of kilowatts of electricity get burned, thousands of gallons of gas and diesel disappear into engines.
Every one of those things keeps this machine moving. Each of these items requires manpower, such a cool concept.
I’ve had the honor of working in this city for nearly 18 years. It’s a long way from the quiet little village I grew up in. From the swamps of south Louisiana to the towers of H-Town—this is my story.
Little by little, I’m writing it down.
Each day a new adventure begins. Each night I lay my head down already waiting for the sun to rise again. Coffee has never tasted so good.
I’ve never wanted anything more than to Be Someone—to be part of the system that keeps this machine humming along.
It’s only when we step back that we see how each of us plays a part in the great symphony of life.
Balancing the drive to produce, consume, and give back is not easy. Sometimes we fall out of alignment.
The good news?
Each morning gives us a choice. We can choose to be different.
We can choose to make a difference.
If you’re reading this, remember: you’ve been given another day. Make the most of it. Whether you’re selling coffee or swinging a hammer, sitting in a cubicle or working in the field—we all have a role in this symphony.
We are all essential.
Keep playing. Keep dreaming. Be Someone.
Thank you for following along on this journey. The week is nearly over, but the adventure is just beginning.
