Keeping count

70 days, and technically the porch is still not complete. My cat approves and has claimed it.

3.19X more than I initially anticipated it to cost, but the finish line is close.

10x more beautiful than the rendering my wife made over a year ago.

Today was the first morning I sat and enjoyed my newest creation. Cool mornings in Houston can be counted in weeks not months.

When I count the projects I have worked on they range from $250 to over $1,000,000. It has been so cool to see these numbers grow.

Since my last post I have painted a house, renovated an office and built out a MS Project schedule for large multi-family project.

On Thursday I met up with classmates from Rice Business , it has been >11 years since I saw some of them. Yet it seemed like just yesterday that we were slogging our way though a rigorous 2 year program.

This post is about counting.

It is amazing the things I find myself counting these days, the most meaningful is counting the mornings I am given to add to the story I call life.

In business I count everything and analyze them to the N-th degree. I am looking to solve the equation I have made up in my head. I am looking for the linear regression that will explain the variance in construction projects, I am looking for a number.

Over the years I have been able to overcome some of the most difficult things through counting.

The hardest challenge I ever faced was to quit smoking cigarettes. I did it though counting.

4,076 days since I smoked my last cigarette. Cold turkey. Just a spreadsheet on my phone to remind me how many days it had been.

Once I broke this habit I challenged myself to see what else I could do. I have never looked back.

Whatever challenges you may be facing the best advice I can give you is this, start counting.

It’s ok to start over, just don’t quit.

The count is for you and no one else, the numbers have no judgement.

Whether you are counting down to retirement to counting up to the day you ________ , keep counting.

Have a beautiful day!
