I can’t adult today
Imagine if it were that easy, a bag of “I can’t ____ today” candy.
Eat one, and poof, responsibilities vanish.
I snapped this picture in a cool candy store the other day.
Zoom in.
Look at the three bags in the front, what do you notice?
Here’s a hint: check the price.
The Peter Pan bag is a dollar cheaper.
Now, the real question, does that $1.00 difference influence your purchase decision?
I recently updated my prices on some of my models, and man, a LOT has changed since June 2024.
Everything is more expensive, insurance, materials, labor.
What is the right next step?
WARNING NERD TALK BELOW THIS LINE:
From a purely economic standpoint, is this business owner looking for price elasticity of demand?
Has he/she studies economics and is seeking the point on a graph where:
Price Elasticity of Supply = Price Elasticity of Demand?
Do they not know that at this point MC=MR as well?
Does the owner realize that at this point there is ZERO Economic profit?
WARNING MORE NERD TALK COMING:
Is this candy display actually a behavioral economics experiment?
Is the owner using AI and surveillance data to study how tiny price changes affect buying decisions?
Reality Check:
Or… did a $7.00/hr employee just mis-tag the item?
Or… is this simply last year’s inventory that never got price adjusted?
Back to the story.
I poke fun at this because, in business, all of it matters, pricing, consumer behavior, inventory management.
Anyone with an MBA has had ALL this stuff pounded into their heads as critical.
Which brings me back to the title of this post: I can’t adult today.
Some days, I look at this “thing” I’ve built and wonder, did I make it too complicated?
Then, I think about the candy shop owner in Grapevine.
Do they really use behavioral economics to influence candy shoppers?
Or are they just trying to sell some damn candy?
Either way, today I’m choosing the bag of puppies riding unicorns under rainbows.
I am choosing to keep keep building things, taking cool pictures and writing stories.
I mean, why not?
Might as well chase big dreams, eat candy at any time during the day, and enjoy the ride.
If you had to choose a bag of candy which one would you choose?
