Chapter 1: How it started

It was March 16, 2017 and I was in Mexico. I had just wrapped up a 10 day business development trip, and took the afternoon off to go to explore the countryside. I found myself in the queen’s bathroom, yes, I did say that correctly. Little did I know that this image foreshadowed what was to come.

When I boarded the plane the next morning I received an email form my boss requesting a meeting, I thought nothing of it. I arrived in the office a little after 12:00, I made my way to a conference room as requested. I had a PPT presentation fired up, ready to discuss the the opportunities I had found while in Mexico. It was a Friday, I was going to spend the weekend with my girls.

When the HR manager walked in with my boss I knew, checkmate. This was not my first time being laid off, I was still recovering from the July 2014 incident. In my 17 years of work, I had laid off over 100 people, never personal, just business I always told myself. Boy does it sting to be terminated.

In less than 45 minutes after setting up my laptop, I was standing in the front of the office with a cardboard box waiting for an Uber. That evening on the back porch of my house my wife and I made a pact, we vowed to not let this happen again, we pressed the green button.

Oil closed that day at $48.78, no one was hiring, I had a two choices: bet on me or bet on a commodity price.

I had small bankroll, enough tools to build just about anything and energy, lots and lots of energy.
